hi havent been on for a while now but i have a couple questions, im pulling the 383 out of my duster and the other 383 i was building was going to turn into a stroker any ways so i managed to find a 440 but it is a 74, probably low compression, does any one know what the hp and tq specs are along with the compression?? i would like to shave the heads and get 10:1 compression and run a comp 284 xe cam and roller chain and use the 69 hp manifolds, does any one have a rough idea how the engine would repsond to that?? would also like to throw a single plane intake on it? its going to be bolted to a 3000 stall with either 3.23 gears or 3.90's im looking for opinions and any info kinda on a budget too, also wondering how it will fit vs. my 383??
thanks again

I doubt you can get to 10 to 1 on just shaving the heads. The low compression late 440s dont have much to start with. The rest of it looks ok

The 72 and up big blocks had a maxium of 180HP,a completely useless motor for performance. Its a great motor if it is to be use to rebuild it to 69-70 specs and toss most of the internals and install the good parts, pistons, valve train, heads, intake carb, etc.I have a few 72-78 motors with well over 500HP in them and no problems, and I beat the piss out of them.Just know that its a complete rebuild unit,as this motor in stock forum makes the same power as a the average 318,put the money into it and enjoy it,mrmopartech

One advantage to stroking the 383 is that it will fit right back in the same spot as before....a 440 will change very many things beside the added horsepower...Check out my thread in Members restorations...My Recent 440 Build for My 68 Dart if you are leaning towards the 440..

You cant mill the heads that much. Just put a mild cam in with a good valve job and intake/carb.

My 77 smog 440 in my 70 Coronet with a Mopar 284 484 cam, dual plane, 800 Holley, headers and 3.91 ran 13.80 with a bog in the carb and bad tires. Some tuning and sticky tires could have gotten mid to low 13's easy.

I assure you they make more power and torque than a 318 stock. Much more.

......Ur easiest route to more hp+tork is to offset grind the crank .060.........ull gain approx 13 cubes and alittle over 1 point comp...........kim..........
