Hi guys, I am ready to put the windshield back in my '75 duster. The problem is, the local company I'm having put it in quoted me like $170 for the gasket and another $20 for some other locking gasket, or something like that.
I can get the gasket much cheaper online from mopar shops, but some of them say there were two gaskets, and others say mine has only one, only the earlier dusters used two. Year One doesn't even list one for a '75, and their tech guys said that there was only 1 gasket for a '74, which should be the same, right? This is why I'm confused. The only thing I have is the windshield and all the stainless windshield trim, can anybody tell me exactly what else I need so I can get this car on the road.

Thanks,

Will

Steelrubber.com has the gasket for $118. Last I heard the gasket year one sells is to big for the window. As far as I know there is one gasket and no lock strip for your car.

Thank you very much, that's what I was wanting to know. Do you know anything about moparsbycrane or dante's parts? They both have the one gasket listed for $85 and $90

I have bought from Dante before, No problems. He sells what ever Legendary sells. I would email him and ask who makes the windshield gasket, I know Fastback340 had a problem with the one he bought. Dont now who he got it from.

I used the one's from Steele Rubber on my 73' Duster. I had the Gasket, plus round lockstrip. If memory serves both pieces were in the $175-200 range. Now, IMO the 73-76's were all the same shape n size windshield, the "tint" on the top may have changed from year to year, but that's all. So the gasket should be the same as well.

PS> Make sure you leave the gasket sitting in the sun for an hour, it will be much easier to work with

ok, got the windshield in, and there is a big problem. The gasket fit great in the body, and the windshield fit great in the gasket. However, when we put the stainless trim on, there is a huge, 3/8" gap between the gasket and trim on the roof line and the a pillar. Now, this is the original window, trim, and I have not removed or changed the original clips, so it has to be the gasket. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm pissed to say the least. By the way, the gasket is a precision gasket, and it was professionally installed by a local glass company with many years experience.

Thanks,

Will

I just saw this thread. I have 75 Duster that I just took the windshield out of about 3 months ago. It had the gasket and locking gasket (i.e. 2 piece), not that it helps you now. 8)

Just FYI.

I'll need a gasket in the future.
What company did you use,
and what part # did you get?

A few years ago, we replaced the window gaskets on my son's '74 Dart Sport. We bought all our seals and weatherstripping from www.hardensmcw.com and had no problems with the stainless trim fitting after replacing the rubber. Both front and rear window seals used the round locking strip.

I will say that we were not able to use the new roof rail seals (seals around the door windows). They had some sort of funky molded groove not found on our original seal, and the corners were not molded properly to fit tight where the quarter window meets the roof rail. Fortunately, we were able to re-use the original ones. I would have to dig the bad ones out of storage to see who made them.

Why don't you post a couple of pics to show us what your problem is?

Jerry

Will, The gasket wont have much affect on the molding as the clip location doesn't change when the gasket goes in. If you are using the same molding with the original clip location, make sure the molding goes between the body and the clip, not between the clip and the gasket.

Ditto what player1up just said. If your bright trim "snaps" onto the clips properly, there can be no gap - it is a very tight fit.

I gotta wonder if there was a change in the pinch weld area (fence) at a year model or if vynil top equiped is a factor. The vynil top material went in under the molding clips thus pushing the molding toward the glass. Don't sound like a big difference anywhere except at the tops seam folds.
I've got 2 OEM rear gaskets for 68 and 69 notchback cudas. The 68 was vynil top equiped and both its gaskets are interlocking one piece type.
The 69 gasket has a round rubber lock cord where there was no vynil top.
Not an answer , just clues. Good luck

I have a vinyl top '73 Duster in my back yard from which I just pulled the stainless trim last week. Aaron drives a non-vinyl top '74 Dart Sport that we replaced the gaskets on a few years ago. And we used/parted out a vinyl top '76 Duster back when we rebuilt his Dart Sport. As best I can tell (and recall), they were all identical with regard to the window gaskets. They all used the round locking strip, the reveal clips were all the same, and the stainless trim fit exactly the same (I used the same tool in the same manner to remove the trim).

I love mysteries,
Jerry

p.s. A few photos would speak volumes in this case.

ok guys, this is gonna be long, so hang tight, but you said you love mysteries!

I have called Precision gasket, which is who makes the gasket, and they say basically that they have never had this problem before and there must be something wrong with my car. Now, this car is original, never had any real metal work, especially around the windows, and has only been repainted and had a new vinyl top put on. I do not know if the window was out because I didnt do the work, it was done before I bought it. But, there is a little bit of surface rust around the window channel, so I'd bet a paycheck it had never been out. I have reused the windshield, trim, and I never took the clips out or moved them at all! Now this gasket won't fit, and it fit perfect before. Unfortunately, I threw my old gasket away 2 years ago because they were remaking them. In fact, the new gasket self zips at the bottom, and I definitely do not remeber that. Stupid me. Now, onto my detective work.

Precision is apparantely the only one that makes a gasket for a duster, period. I have found out, this is from their mouths, that the 70-73 duster had a different chrysler part number window gasket than the 74-76 dusters, Interesting! However, they never actually fitted it on a new model duster to see if it fits. They received both part numbers from chrysler and said they looked the same, so they put it as one part number for all years when they tooled them. Oh it gets better.

I call year one and steelrubber, who sells the same precision gasket as their own, and talk to their tech guys. Steelerubber calls me back later in the day and said he found that from 74 and up the duster used a different part number for the windshield gasket, so they said they are no longer advertising it for a 74-76 duster. It gets even better

Year one says that their R&D team actually fitted all these gaskets on all the a bodys of to see if they fit, and found out that the same gasket precision says fits all dusters, will not fit a 74 and up duster, something about the lock strip being different. Year one has only listed the same gasket as a 70-73 duster windshield gasket, and says there is not one available for the 74 and up. They said they've known this for around 10 years now. Glad to know precision did their homework.

So, I have a gasket that does not fit my car, does not look like it should fit my car, and does not look like what I remember the original one looking like, with comfirmation from the people who sell their gasket that it does not fit my car, and yet precision gaskets say that there is something wrong with my car. So, I would like you to tell me your opinion, is my car a one of a kind
f*&*ed up car, or is precision full of it.

P.S. If someone tells me how, I'll post some pictures of this train wreck!!!

Thanks guys,

Will

Really?? Then, I guess the gasket we put on my son's '74 Dart Sport was made by them. OK, it's not a Duster, but.....a kissing cousin.

...found out that the same gasket precision says fits all dusters, will not fit a 74 and up duster...
Really?? Then, I guess there must be something basically different in the construction of the window channel on my son's '74 Dart Sport than a '74 Duster. Not likely.

...says there is not one available for the 74 and up. They said they've known this for around 10 years now.
Really?? If Precision is the only one who makes gaskets for these cars, then I wonder where the one came from that Hardens Muscle Car World sold to us?

...yet precision gaskets say that there is something wrong with my car.
Really?? What else could they say, given the fact that they must have made the gasket that doesn't fit your window.

...or is precision full of it.
A resounding YES!

All I can tell you definitively is that I bought front and rear window seals from Hardens Muscle Car World for our '74 Dart Sport. It fit like a glove and has not had a single leak in over three years in service. I suggest you call them and explain your situation. Maybe they have an answer.

If someone tells me how, I'll post some pictures of this train wreck!!!

Let's get this thing figured out,
Jerry

P.S. Here is what I also found tonight in an online catalog for Restoration Specialties.

WCRD759 70-76 Dart Sport & Demon, Duster - 2DR HTOP FASTBACK

yep, thats the part number I bought, wcrd759, and it definitely does not fit. I will call hardens and see what they say. I will also post the pictures when I get home now that you so kindly explained to me how to do so 8)

Thanks,

Will
