Hi, I picked up a 8 1/4 the other day the guy said it came out of a 74 Duster / Dart. The drums that are on it say 11" and they are have fins on them. Are they the right drums ? I thought the rear brakes are 10 1/2 on that axle ?
Thanks for any info.

So the outside of the drum is stamped something like "max dia. 11.08"? If it is then they're 11x2.5" drums. They do make 10" finned drums, but if they measure 11" on the inside then they're 11's.

The 11" drums came on plenty of cars, including cars with 8.25" rears, but they're not stock to any A-body. They share the same offset and everything as the BBP 10x2.5" drums though, so they'll work just fine, they'll bolt right on in place of the 10x2.5" brakes for an easy brake upgrade. It's possible someone just upgraded the brakes on that 8.25", but I'd want to make sure that's actually an A-body 8.25". Also, if you're not running disks up front though you'll be way rear biased on your braking, you'll probably need an adjustable proportioner in the system.

I run 11x2.5" drums on my Challenger, Duster, and have them set up on my EL5 GT (not on the road yet). But I also run 11.75" front disks off the later B/R bodies on all of my cars as well to keep the front/rear brake bias where it needs to be. You also need to run 15" rims with the 11" drums.

Thanks guys for the info. The drums do say max dia. 11.08 on them. The axle is the right length for a A body and the perches are in the right spot. someone probably did the 11" up grade. I got the axle for fifty bucks and Iam picking up a posi unit an 3.91 gears from the guy for 150. this weekend ;) I cant wait to get in my car. which has a 8" ford in it now :(

Wow, you did good! Even the 8.25" A body axles cost a lot more than that usually, same with the sure grips.

Don't forget to work out something with an adjustable proportioning valve, even with 10.87" disks in the front your braking will probably be rear-biased with the 11" drums.

I will have to wait untill I put axle in the car and see how the brakes feel. I have 14in. magnum 500's on the car now I have to pick up a couple 15in ones for the rear
