8.25 Rear End Internals Interchange

Am I correct in saying that gears 2.71 and higher numerically and Sure Grips are interchangeable from any rear end up through 97, which IIRC, is when they went to a 29 spline axle? Reason I ask is I've acquired an A Body 8.25 peg leg with 2.71 gears and I'd like to upgrade it with a Sure Grip and higher numerical gears (3.21, 3.55 or 3.90s). The 4WD early Daks typically came with 3.55s and some with 3.90s (and are readily available in several local junkyards. OR, would it just b e better to go with readily available brand new stuff?

Correct 2.71 and higher are interchangable till 97. 75 and older housings use smaller (O.D.) carrier bearings but the I.D. of the bearings are all the same. So swaping a newer carrier into an older housing requires the smaller bearings.

Thanks! I see that there are several type SG's available for the 27 spline - I see the Auburn and Detroit locker listed on epay. Is one better (or stronger) than the other?
