i have an a body small pattern rear
i am going to get axles to swap to big bolt battern
but what do i do for breaks do i just need new drums
or backing plates ect.

I just did this on my A-body 8 3/4! You can NOT use your old backing plates! Small bolt pattern backing plates are different. The large pattern drums will not fit on them, they will rub. You will need to get backing plates from a 8 3/4 rear that already had the LARGE bolt pattern axles, A,B,C,E, should work. You can also use ones from large pattern 7 1/4, 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 rears. It just depends what size you want your drums to be, 9", 10", or 11". I used 11 inch cop car brakes from a 1985 Gran Fury, they are heavier but will be great for stopping!! I bought the brake shoes and hardware at the store too. When you are at the store just tell them what vehicle you got the parts from, they should be easy to get. Good Luck!

I am not sure, it may weaken the drum. I do know that a-body 65-72 8 3/4 rear brake shoes are all narrower that the larger bolt pattern rears.
