My plans are to run a total of 450 - 550 HP... will this rear end hold up?? I have:read2: found one for a couple hundred dollars and want to pick it up but before i do, i am trying to make sure i am making a wise decision... what can anyone advise me with this?????

Thanks

1-3/8" small stem pinion... (a.k.a. '741')...
Carrier casting numbers: 1820657 (1957-1964), 2070741 (1964-1972).
This assembly was typically used in low weight/low horsepower
applications through low weight/medium horsepower and high weight/low
horsepower applications.

Depends on what the rear is out of?

If it's a 66-70 B rear then it might be a decent deal. If it's an A body rear for $200 then it's a great deal.

As far as cases, any of them will work just fine for what you plan. When you start transbraking/slicks ALL of them will break depending on car weight.

A friend of mine has run one on a 74 360 Cuda for years with no problems. The car does get raced on occasion, so the drivetrain does get stressed. It has not been subjected by rev up followed by dropping into gear. If that's part of your repetoire, I don't know how well it will hold up.

I would prefer seeing you using a 489 or 742 case, with that kind of power..the 741 has the weakest pinion bearing of the 8 3/4's...my duster with the 416 stroker making only 520 h.p.,snapped the driverside wheel studs clean off one day, then ripped the driveshaft right off the pinion yoke another, taking no more chances,i installed a set of Moser axles w/1/2" studs, and billet yoke, had a custom 3"driveshaft made with the 1350 yokes, and of coarse i'm running a 489 case, the last thing i'm worried about is my rear, your getting up there in power and the stock stuff CAN'T handle it,i found that out..8)

As stroked 340 pointed out with proper prep and parts the rear will be fine. Good axles, studs and above all else a 742 or 489 case. It's not worth spending the money on the 741 case. Gear selection is limited and it is the weakest of the lot. The 742 case has the largest rear pinion bearing of any modern passenger car rearend and that's why Mopar used that case and gear set for their aluminum carrier. Good neoprene type pinion seals are hard to come by for them though. Leather ones are easily obtainable and work fairly well. There are billet bearing caps available for them as well as back braces. Spools also help with ring gear deflection but aren't practical for a street cruiser.

All of this assumes your car is an automatic equipped vehicle. If it's a stick car forget it and just get the Dana. You'll be hundreds of dollars ahead in the long run.
