Ok, so I bought a Ramcharger a few months go and I was thinking of upgrading/updating the ignition on it. I believe it has some sort of lean burn system behind the battery, in the fender. I was thinking of converting it to a HEI system with a new E-coil, a design2drive conversion plate and HEI module, and a MP quick advance distriburor.
Can I just change the coil and distributor and leave the wires connected to the lean burn system? The dist in the truck now does not have any vacuum advance or any mechanical advance in the distributor. I presume the big module controls all of that somehow and I think, in my mind , that a quick advance dist, HEI, and vacuum will get me better performance and fuel economy. Am I on the right track?

If the current system is working correctly now, I fear you will spend a lot of coin for just a little gain.
Put a timing lite on it, and see what its doing. Map it all out. You may have to go to the service manual to see how its supposed to work.IIRC, some of those LB systems had unusual ways , and times of working, and many requirements had to be met.
But yes, you may see some improvements in drive-ability.
I have an 84 D-100 that I removed the LB from. It seemed to be a little better. a little....

If you put a regular distributor on in and leave the LB hooked up it will probably run worse.

"Somewhere" on the www awhile back I ran into a "how to" on disconnecting lean burn. Seems to me it was either a pickup or Ramcharger, Google?

remove lean burn, pickup

Get a 70s electronic distributor and harness. Recurve the distributor and have fun.

I already have a quick advance distributor and I will do a search on removing it.
Thanks fellas!
