After looking at clearances with the traditional oil filter, I decided to use a 90 degree adaptor. The traditional filter has a plate attached to mount the filter, do l leavevthat plate in place and install the 90 degree adaptor over it, or do I remove the plate and then install the adaptor? Attached photos are better than my description.

No plate, just the adapter, and the three gaskets that it takes to install it!

You'll need a kit like this. The smaller gaskets go on the bolt. The cork goes under the adapter, the other small one under the bolt head. They are getting harder and harder to find.
