I finally had a change to drive my Dart. 8)
I had rebuilt this tranny about 4 or 5 years ago, but never before used it.
Now, when i reversed the car out of garage, the tranny felt good. Except it was hard to drive slowly out of the garage, cos it spinned wheels pretty easily. :)
Head to the dirt track/test road. First gear felt good, but actually I expected little more slipping on tranny, but only that was slipping was rear tires. :)
Well, i floored it, but soon when I was expecting the 1st->2nd change, it felt like tranny jammed and rear tires stopped spinning, then it was 1st gear again. Little more careful accelerating, and it happened again.

Friend told me that band adjustment may not help in this problem, but didnt have time to explain... :(

Please, tell me, if anyone could know if I might did something wrong when I rebuilt this 904? Or could lying in garage without oil cause something to jam and make this happen? I've never even heard about anything like this, nor does my Finnish friends. :(

-LionStab- ;)

PS:It was first time ever I tried to rebuild automatic trans, and the result was pretty much expected.

yes, did you on the startup have tranny in neutral when filling fluid ? always check fluid level in neutral. if you didn't soak friction plate and band i believe you could have other problems.

Yes, it was in neutral when filling and in first startup.
But it actually spilled out some oil from the first in front oil pipe... Car was running maybe 2 minutes before i noticed it. :eek:ops:

So, can we assume that I need to drop the tranny again, and renew clutch plates? Or what was that friction plate what you are talking about?
I really am newbie with automatics.

the correct term friction plates are what you are calling clutch plates . i would not dorp tranny just yet ,a band adjustment ( readjustment ) might be worth a try, before you drop tranny again. member fishy68 should chim in on this thread and help with his 2 cents .

................Is the kick down set properly, unhook it then see if it shifts, if not the governor is probably sticking causing ur no upshift,,,ofcourse it could b a valve in the valve body.................kim...........

Since you say it seems to lock up when it shifts into 2nd then works in 1st when you stop it sounds like the rear servo is stuck or it broke and jammed in the bore. Also possible you cranked down the rear band too tight. Jack it up and run it with the tires in the air with it in manual low then shift to 2nd gear. If it locks up the wheels the rear band is being applied for some reason when it shouldn't which could be the rear band adjustment or stuck/broken servo.

Thanks for all of You. :) Hopefully, I'll be back to the garage for weekend. I let You know what I find out. I hope its just the rear band. I used Mark Eisenharts method on band adjustment, but I'm not so sure if I did it right. http://www.mopar1.us/band.html

Wow! Its been a long "weekend"! Been busy with my family and jobs, and "jobs" between the jobs..
I finally readjusted bands this summer, and drove the car out of garage, just to get my friends car out from behind mines.

Well, offcourse i had to have a test drive, without a hood, seatbelts, seats, doors, the bolt that holds steering wheel, etc.. I just sat on old spare tire...
I can tell you, when i floored it in a narrow dirt road, the second gear felt awesome!!! Going sideways with this aplication didnt felt safe, but i just had to do it again, and again! :toothy7:
