My car has a 904 with 72,000 miles on it that worked perfectly when i tore the car down. I have built the 273 engine to 250/275 Hp and will be running an 8 1/4 locker with 3:21 gears. I am trying to decide on whether to try to find a local shop that knows what they are doing to recondition the transmission or buy the TCI package which appears to be a mild performance bolt-in setup. I have been quoted the high side of $700.00 to recondition mine. I am interested in any thoughts you might have or experience with the TCI products. Thanks for looking---------------:toothy8:

I would do it myself and get the parts from somewhere like bulkpart.com or hughes. You can get a basic rebuild kit or build it up a bit more for any future add-ons with things like Red alto clutches, kolene steels, Trans-go shift kit, etc. Get a good service manual like the atsg one. I also got the dvd from Paul Zank that goes through a complete rebuild start to finish. Its really easy to rebuild these transmissions. Plus you will save yourself a few hundred bucks and have some new found skills to boot.

I have known very few people that were happy with a torqueflite built by TCI. I'd do it myself or find a reputable shop to do it.

i tore one apart and put it back together in 1 hour this afternoon...

very easy trans to work on and rebuild...

Thanks all: I have the DVD on the way (thanks crackedback) and have decided to rebuild it myself. Unsure about the converter but probubly just by a stock reman or something. I have a friend who has done a 727 and getting ready to do another for his 71 Challanger so I will help him with it to learn then we will do my 904. I am putting the money I will save into a 5HP air compressor so I can get on with the bodywork on my ride. Great advice from all!:)

700 is absolute highway robbery to do a bench job. If you are removing it and replacing it, that's just a crazy stupid price. I agree about the TCI stuff. Leaves a lot to be desired. Once you take one apart and build it, you will wonder why you've never done it before. If you can tie your shoes, you can rebuild a torqueflite.
