I'm getting ready to try and rebuild my first trans ever. I have a 904 out of 1973 Dart Swinger with 318. So I checked my output shaft endplay and im way out of spec according to the mopar service manual. So i was told the 73 thrust washer kit was discontinued. Anyone know or hear this? Thanks for any help.

Because I'm trying to make sure I order the right thrust washer kit. And it doesn't go into detail on that..

Also. There are transmission supply houses with all that stuff. Some on line and some locally.... transmission shops will sell you the parts you need. Don’t be afraid to go to especially a smaller transmission rebuilding shop and ask in person (not on the phone) the parts you require. A lot will sell in person especially for cash. Just food for thought.

My local transmission shop sold me a sector shaft bushing for a 904 ...for a buck. Walked in handed him the old one and told him what it was from and he walked over to a set of dusty drawers, picked out 3, eyeballed them and handed me one..a Dollar.

What did it measure? And what did the input shaft end play measure? Take it apart before you start ordering parts; sometimes wear on hard parts is the culprit to increased end play. Almost every trans I get has been apart before, and often parts are switched from different years.

Thanks for the suggestions and tips. The reason I'm asking is because the two places I've called said the 1973 thrust washer kit was discontinued and any that I find was for a 74 and up. My endplay is 109 thousands. I am going to keep shopping. Just don't want to buy the wrong parts. Thanks

Boxer, where are you in Kansas? I am in the KC area and may have some of the parts you need plus i have all the tools and drivers, etc.

Thanks Tom. Wow I've read some great articles on you. I'm in the bottom south east corner Coffeyville but I go to KC frequently. Do you have a site ?

Don't forget the factory manual which you can download, free from MyMopar

There's a couple of great videos on the www even the 727 based ones are helpful

Well the last owner burnt all the clutches up in it. But after talking to VOETOM it wasn't the factory tranny. It was supposed to be a 73 turns out it was a 68.

I always like to know what a trans was doing wrong so when I open it up, I find the cause of the problem. I don't want it to do the same thing all over again. And I never go by the numbers because too often, internal parts are changed; sometimes to the point that they're not compatible.

Thrust Washers for the 904 are dependant on wether you have alumimium or steel planetaries. The washers look very similar but the tangs are oriented differently.

Ok. I will definitely keep thst in mind. So does the thrust washer fit on the output shaft? Thats what the drawings would suggest.

I live in KC north. I have a 66 barracuda with a 904 that has 33K miles on it, and works great, but leaks. Do you do transmission work or can refer me to someone in the area that can ?

A&A transmissions are the experts on torqueflight parts and rebuilds. If you’re planning on putting any sort of power into that trans a bolt in sprag from them is cheap insurance while you’re in there.
