So I am looking to buy a 904 for my 75 Duster. I found one on Marketplace, not far away, with little to no info about it. I messaged the poster as to whether it was a 6 cyl or small block tranny and the poster replyed he did not know. He gave a serial number, 2464450, and a few pics, but no other info. Is there a way to figure this out? thanks.

Please post the pics you were sent, should make it fairly easy to discern between a small block and a slant 6.
Double check the number, it is stamped on a pad just above the driver's side pan rail- it should (but not always) start in "PK", then xxxxxxx. This will give us year and model info.

Slant six the starter is located at the top right in this photo.
Some from years ago had a low mount. And were ball and trunnion .Not what you are looking for a 1975.
a V8 904 has the starter at the lower right in photo #2

Thanks for the reply. I will look into posting those pics, but that requires a level of computer competence that I usually have to call my niece for advice on how to do that.

Thanks for replying, these pics are great. The pics of the 904 that I am looking at definately look like the second pic, the small block version, which is what I want. Do you know if any of these trannys were ever used in trucks, vans, etc? The pics I have don't show a clear view of the tail shaft and the owner bought his tranny from an estate sale so he doesn't have any history.

V8 904 (999 versions with locking converters starting in 1978) could be had in light trucks and vans.
I'm not a numbers guy. If you go to the web site My Mopar you can find that information that lists year and what it was used in by the number found stamped on the pan rail about under the shifter shaft on the case.
If the seller will look for that number you will know just where it came from.
