Hi guys. Im putting a slant six in my 72 scamp and just put new trans fluid in.the rans is a 1972 904. the Haines manual said the transmission needs 16 pints of transmission fluid. well I got to about 14 pints and then then it started leaking. I am new at this all this so I dont know if this is because I overfilled , because of a leak or because maybe the torque converter is not in full lock up. also, the kid in the auto department said to use atf +3 but but the haines manual says Dexron II or III fluid???? I am totally lost and any help would be most appreciated. thanks guys

Hi there,

Did you fill the torque converter with as much fluid as possible before installing the converter into the transmission? 16 pints would be 8 quarts, which sounds about right with a dry converter.

It sounds like it started leaking out of the dipstick tube. I would start the vehicle, and let the converter fill in neutral. That should drop the fluid level down some.

It is ok to use ATF+3 even though it calls for dexron III, in fact I'd encourage it.

thanks for the info. It didn't look like it was coming out of the dipstick tube, more like from behind the converter. what could that be then?

Well I guess it was overfilled enough that it could leak out of the factory front pump vent--It's located behind and above the converter, in the pump housing.

I would clean it off real good, make sure no transmission fluid is on the exhaust (fire hazard), and run the vehicle in neutral, to fill the converter, and check the flud level from there.

Hope this helps!

looks like everythings working ok now. thanks a bunch for your expertise! you rock!
