I have a 65 barracuda ,it suddenly got a starting problem , we chased wires, got new boxes, I could cross start it , but then I was talking with the boyz ,and I thought mabee a neutral safety switch , nope wasn't the problem . so I started moving the shifter real small increments , and click ,click I got movement in starter, and the car fired right up . // so I need help , It shifts great ,and sits in park good but I have to find the sweet spot for it to start.i need a good tranny man or good mechanic ,to tell me if there is a way to fine tune the adjustment on the 904 tranny from the outside , is it internal adjustment ,and were I start at .and how to ,if not self explanatory, or is my cable stretched to far and need replacement . I "ve read a lot of similar not starting threads on here over time , and I think this problem is getting over looked I just stumbled on it . this may be more common than we think ,changing all electrical boxes ,and chasing wiring problems , when its in the tranny or cable adjustment , PLEASE HELP if you can .I seem to see this simualar problem come up often on this site . I think it could be a great help for a lot of us . thanks guys

the simple fix....that the wire from Starter relay switch G terminal...and ground it to the body...

Engine will start in any gear...but at least it will work...

will do // but is my cable stretched or is there an adjustment external that I am missing gr8 info great info worked like a charm for those having ignition issues ,remember this little trick . but would still like to get to the source of the problem , can I adjust the cable or is it stretched from age ,and needs to be replaced.
thanks tony and E

you will need a 65 manual(not chiltons) to find the cable adjustment procedure. 1965 is 1 year only. Lawrence

Sometimes it's the neutral safety switch, and sometimes it's just an adjustment is needed.
The best way to adjust the shifter is with the pan off and to have a second person select gears while you watch the manual lever that the cable hooks to. Watch the pointer, where it hits the neutral safety switch, the cable needs to be adjusted so that pointer returns to the safety switch each time, from both directions. (from park to neutral and from first to neutral)
If the cable is worn or the outer housing is burned, you may not get the repeatability needed and it is best to find a replacement.
