Here's a question I've been tossing around in my mind for a few weeks now. I'm building a 66 Dart with a 408 mated to a 904. I plan on doing some racing 3-4 times a year. Should I buy a trans shield to be safe or is it only the 727 trans that explode. I've searched for info on this but only find stories of 727. I don't like taking chances but if it's not needed I don't want to spend the money. Shields are $300. Also if I do need it how well do the shields fit the early A body cars. Anyone running one that has pics they can post.
Thanks Rod

Just prepare yourself and use proper procedure when shifting. You'll be fine.

3) Misuse/abuse on the street or strip in first gear.
-Remember you can only damage the sprag in 1st gear. Start your burnout in 2nd, and shift to 3rd. When on the street, repetitively getting in and out of the throttle while in 1st gear can damage the sprag.

I've read that post and it's quite interesting. However it is pointed at the 727 trans. In my younger days I raced a 70 440 cuda that had a 727. I never had any issues but had a friend that had one explode. Luckily he didn't loose any limbs, but it tore the console apart. But has this ever happened with a 904. Should I just be safe and purchase a shield or am I worrying to much. Anyone have pics of one installed?

Thanks
Rod

Can a 904 explode, sure.

Not many mopars, especially street beaters, can spin enough RPM to achieve critical mass.

It's a non issue for all but the craziest high RPM builds.
