I am looking for a commuter car. Thanks to cash for clunkers prices for used cars are higher than they used to be. After searching crags list the best deal I can find is a 99 DeVille for 3500$. It appears to be in great shape and has 153,000 miles on it. The guy that is selling it lost his leg and cant get in the car any more.
Am i crazy for even looking at a GM product? I know these engines seem to have a bad rep for blown head gaskets. I will be honest this is really the only thing preventing me from purchasing this car. Any of you guys had experience with these engines?

You better run like hell.

It's more than "just headgaskets". The threads in the block fail and the headbolts pull out.

The entire engine has to come out from below to repair it and it's not a sure bet repairing the threads will be a lasting fix. That's why there are TONS of these cars in the junkyard, because fixing them exceeds the cars value.

Great cars otherwise but this is a fatal flaw.

You can get a good Camry or Accord for that price that will run nearly forever and get 10mpg better.

junk, dont waste your money on a 99 caddy. you will be kicking yourself. tyler W knows what he speaks of....
