I believe I have an A833 4-speed transmission in my 1964 Valiant. Recently, I noticed an A833 being sold with an advertised gear ratio of 1:00 3rd gear, and .79 4th gear, similar to a 3-speed with overdrive. Is this typical for the A833?

That is an 833 overdrive which first came out in the mid 70's to help with gas mileage - remember the first gas crisis in 73? You have a regular 833 4 speed with 4th gear being 1.00. It does not have a "regular" front u joint but what's called a ball and trunnion.

Thanks. I have to assume shifting from 1st to 2nd gear with one of those late-model trannys was very quick..

IIRC the first gear ratio is the same in both transmissions while the 2nd is different. I will be using a 65 833 (same as what you have) in my wagon. When it was in my old slant-equipped 65 Valiant, a 5th overdrive gear would have been nice!
