I had an issue with my 2-3 gear shift. It would do fine under normal driving conditions until operating temperature... Then, it would slip or seem like third gear is not fully engaged unless you get off the throttle, shift, back on the throttle (same result under full throttle). It also had an shudder in Reverse when at operating temperature. I found a broken cup and a damaged band. Would replacing the cup and band fix the issue or do I need to check the servos and seal for the direct drum also? I do have a manual valve body installed.

The front band only affects 2nd gear so that's not the problem you describe, although it is trashed and needs replaced. Not sure what that cup is. I don't recognize it. The rear band and the front clutch are responsible for reverse. The front clutch is also responsible for 3rd gear. Since you have a problem in reverse and high gear the common factor there is the front clutch. Either the seal is leaking or the clutch plates are toast. You can try an air pressure test to see if the front clutch engages solidly but that won't tell you the condition of the clutch plates. Only way to tell that is to disassemble the trans for an inspection

Thanks for your input!

The cup goes on the end of the output shaft... A washer goes under the cap for the end play. The clutches are in great shape. Everything else looks good. That would leave the seal. I'll have to get something a compress the spring.

Ahh, I haven't been into a lockup 904. Didn't realize that's how they were designed. Back in my early days of doing transmissions I used 2 sets of c-clamps to compress the retainer. Only thing is you gotta be careful you don't distort it, or pinch the crap out of your fingers if one of the clamps slips off. Do you know of a transmission shop near you? If so you can probably take it to them and have them press it apart and back together. Most places don't charge much for doing something simple like that. Make sure you get the end play tightened up real good so things aren't slamming back and forth. The factory serv. manual is real sloppy on specs. I like to see them with no more than .025" end play and if you can get it down to .015 that's even better

There is no transmission shop around here. I do all my own work for now. I'll have to use C-clamps as well if all else fail. To correct end play, I would need to increase the washer thickness that goes on the output shaft? Never had end play issues before.

Yes, the washer is how you set the end play. Most torqueflite's left the factory with excessive end play. I haven't ran into one yet that I didn't have to tighten up. For an every day grocery getter it's not a huge deal but for something you use in a high perf application it's much better to tighten it up

Just wanted to make sure. I have a few extra washers laying around. Thanks for the help and information!
