I rebuilt and installed a A904 transmission non lockup. With a manual valve body. It is behind a 360LA motor. It goes forward but to get it to go in reverse I have to rev the motor so it does not stall it out. When it is in neutral it will not let me push it backwards. It has a cheap eBay tourq converter 24-2800 stall.

No stalling forward ? I had a 904 manual shift that would stall in any gear. The stator locked up in the converter.
Maybe ? The other thing may be band adjustment as I had one that locked up when it shifted to second. Low & reverse band too tight.
The converter company was Continental it was a 3500 I sent it back and they replaced it.The company is no longer in business. My 2 cents.

It definitely goes in 1st and 2nd not sure on 3rd completely yet it didn’t feel right when I was going I just may not have been going fast enough ( I was just on dirt farm roads not comfortable with it on any paved roads yet)

Forward clutch is not releasing.
Did you air-test it before the VB went on?

If I'm right
This is probably the most common problem with do-it-yourself rebuild. One of the clutch plates, the last one in, probably did not engage the splines, and when you tightened the pump, it folded the plate over and jammed it up.
Try another air-test and pay attention to the sound as it releases compared to the direct clutch.
This is not the only possible scenario; just the most likely
If the airtest is good, then you'll need to study the VB looking for a stuck valve or a spring mix-up.
