AAM 10.5 out of a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 into a 74 dart with a 904. Splines = 30 (27 in the 904) wheels are 8 bolt (want to convert to 5) but it has 4.1's and lsd and is reasonably priced. I don't know the exact difference in width as I believe I should measure the actual axle for that number but Id bet it's too wide, so chop or buy axles that will fit? Are these any good? Has anyone done this? Am I stupid for even asking? I'm just curious at this point, not going to waste money on something that won't work...... again......this week...:-D

I've never heard of one being put in... So if your interested in pioneering go for it. With that comes lots of $$$'s and headaches. The housing is larger than a d 60 and I'm not sure on the size of the axle tubes. The full float axle ends will have to be changed, spring perches moved because truck axles sit under the springs and width. This is just the axle itself, one thing leads to another, being a bigger housing you may have to clearance the floor.

Just some food for thought..

would it be much more work than a Dana? I mean besides the fact there is already information on doing a 60 swap anyone know of any insurmountable hurdles? Ive heard they are just as good a Dana just not the name, I'm surprised I couldn't find any info on them at all here.

Maybe I will try it, winters coming and I don't think I'll be at the track this year so may as well unless anyone tells me not to bother because slot a will never fit into slot b without buying a whole new c.

my truck has one. did you actually look at it? they are huge. going to take up a lot of room under an abody. im not positive but i think the axle tubes are 4". which will be a pain with mounting points. custom shock plates and bigger u bolts, or custom ladder bar bar or 4 link brackets. i have heard gear sets are a little pricier. you can pick up dana 60 pretty cheap i built 2 for 2 darts they can be put together for cheap too. on i used a take off housing from some kind of truck was like brand new 25.00 on ebay, total cost to my door was under 100. nos cover for 10. i bought new 4.30 and 35 spline mosers, new ends and assembly kit, used moser spool. i had 1200 into it all said and done and it would take some serious power to hurt it.

You can buy a d-60 for a A body from currie, i am pretty sure you can.

The AAM does have bigger tubes, bigger heavier everything, floating....

If you want see the Jeep WK (grand limited) ordered right they come with e lockers...that can be adapted with 1 wire.....
Now you got the best of both worlds, open all day long and when need be, instant spool

Well I feel better that at least the next guy to search will find something.
I was planning on a 4 link suspension kit anyway, the gears are already 4.1 so no need to upgrade and its a lsd. It's $500 bucks includes the mounts and some suspension "extras" (I don't know what that means). I was not aware they were that much larger than a Dana 60 as they were the replacement I assumed it would be in the same range, I already figure a 60 is massive so that's probably enough to take the wind out of my sails but I would be curious if anyone has attempted it or has more info.
Cheers.

sorry to resurrect but anyone know what the direct D 60 replacement is then?

im pretty sure they choices are 10.5 or 11.5 for thehd trucks, both AAM axles.

so nothing directly replaces a D 60? Just the ol 9 1/4? Or is it all just merc stuff now?

What are you looking to put a replacement for the D 60 in....

The D-60 came with full float options and non float, what are you looking for in what vehicle ?

I'm just curious what Chrysler is using now that you could actually put in an A-body the same way you do a Dana 60. This thread was just to get some info going as I couldn't find anything on AAM 10.5's here and now realize that the reason is they are too big, I thought they were D60 replacements but apparently not so I'm wondering what is.

the aam 10.5 is used instead of the dana 60. it is much bigger than the dana 60, but that is what is used in the 2500. the 3500 and power wagon use the 3500. im not sure what the 09+ dodges are using or if ford uses the dana 60 anymore either.

The Dana 60 hasn't been under a truck in quite some time...

Especially the dodges, they started using the 70 and 80 in everything, the AAM replaced the 70 and 80, the 70 and 80 replaced the 60 in the late 90's.

I see where you are going now.
You would have to look before 99 for a Dana 60, but all the stuff now in p/u's are huge.

I found an '89 D60 out of a 3/4 ton dodge, supposedly the spider gears are welded? whatever that means, it has 4.1's and both wheels spin so I think I'm good to go (besides getting it narrowed) I'm glad I resisted the urge to try with the 10.5, now I just need to remember where that thread about shortening the Dana was.... while my son get's the springs off and preps it of course.. Ain't I a stinker?
