I recently started work on an 86 dodge D100 with a slant six and found all the canister hoses all cut so I went about reattaching them. But when I went by the diagram I found that the previous owner had removed the preheat vacuum lines, removed the cat, and the capped off a vacuum line to what I believe goes to the air pump. I dont see an air pump in my truck and was wondering if I need it or if I should go buy one and install it.

Is it required for smog reasons? Are the brackets and plumbing still there?

No. all the plumbing is gone and I don't even see a bracket. The only reason I figured it was there was because of the diagram. The diagram doesn't really show it going anywhere but I believe it goes to the exhaust to burn excess gas. Not sure though. I need to get it smogged in order to register it where I live. I guess I'll hook up the cat and all the vacuum lines and try and smog it withou the air pump.

Here in Ca, if it's on the underhood diagram, it has to be on the engine. Check out your local auto recycler and see if they have a setup.

peel the sticker off, remove all bracket that relate to it and and say it never came with one:angel9:

I have the same issue with a 318 and getting it inspected will not be a real issue. What does it take to get it to run correctly? If the catalytic converter is off of my 98 Dakota it will not run

Sounds like the owner was too ignorant to understand what he was doing, too lazy to learn how to do a proper repair, and too cheap to pay someone else to do it, so he just hacked and slashed wherever he saw gol-durn 'mishuns crap, aHyuck!

Cats (meow?) and carbs don't generally play nicely with each other. Without the air pump, the catalyst will likely overheat and melt down internally, plugging up the exhaust flow. Was this '86 originally equipped with an oxygen sensor and feedback carburetor? They came both with and without in '86. The O2 sensor would be threaded into the rear wall of the exhaust manifold's central collector area.

Dang I was gonna give you my air pump of an 86 D100 360 but its locked up solid....just tried to turn it. ;-( and it says "Do NOT lube".....

That's good info. I checked with a local junkyard and they have the air pump with all the brackets and hoses. So I'll be pickin it up this week. I also saw where the hose from the air pump is piped to, and it def goes to the exhaust pipe before the cat converter. Also I can see where the p/o welded the opening on the pipe for my air pump feed shut:wack:. Looks like I'll be taking the pipe from that old Dodge as well as the airpump, brackets and hoses.
