Okay ,yeah I`m old enough to answer this one. A 3/4 cam was anything over 270* duration, hence 3/4 of 360* of cam rotation.

It's a term that was already dated by the 80s. It dates back to flathead Ford days (before my time) when you had a "Full Race cam" and "3/4 race cam". Probably more closely resembles the term "street/strip" today, although the specs are probably quite different.

If your dad had a "purpleshaft cam" it was from Direct Connection (now Mopar Performance) and was probably the "hemi grind" or the .509, as they were called.

Careful Jim, you`re dating yourself!

Oh, I know. I still remember the 60s (but I was still riding a Stingray bike when they ended). I was born in the 50s, but barely. I DON'T remember the Kennedy assassination. How's that for really dating myself?

It was definately a reference to the "almost a race cam" thing...lol.

But I had to have an old guy tell me that

I recall President Kennedy's funeral, etc. :(

For a 318, if you want a decent street cam,
I suggest the Mopar Performance # 4452759

I am using this cam in a 318 in my 64 Valiant. :salut:

There`s a lot of us here born in the 50`s and this surprises me , I thought I was the only one going through a mid-life crisis.

No mid-life crisis here. I've kept my 68 GTS convertible through raising kids, built some big block a-bodies, gone to shows, etc. Still married to my original wife. Everything hurts, but it has for years. If anything, I'm finally doing some work to the house.......

An MP509 cam in a fairly stock 318 would sound mean at idle, but without some really steep gears in the rear and a hi-stall converter, it would be a real dog below about 3200 RPM. Even the MP484 in a 318, unless you had some very high compression and the previously mentioned gears and converter, would be very sluggish on the bottom end. Most of these style cams have a tendency to bleed off compression so you need lots to start with.

Jim, don't feel too bad - I was born in the 40's, but just barely! :)

I've heard of the 40s. I think we learned about them in history class..... :book:

Yeah, those of us who went to high school in the dark ages learned to be smartasses, too.
