Guys, my alternator has a double pulley, but I don't know if both of them were being used. (Everything is removed from the engine bay right now) I want to order a new alternator and would prefer going with a single pulley, if that's all I need.

The car has power steering, no AC

the double groove ALT pulley was for AC only , but will work with a non air set up. a single groove will work with the correct corresponding pulleys and brackets. sometimes we need a washer here or there to get it to line up perfectly lol

According to what I'm gathering from the another thread, single groove with no A/C.

Bruce, you ever get the feeling weve been here before ?? LOL , now wheres Steve lmao

When I swapped to the 60 amp alternator they told me they only carried the double pulley style, and since I was broke down on the side of the road with a dead battery I took it.
Most likely that's why they only carried the double because the double pully style worked on both AC and non AC I guess.

If you use the wrong pulley config, you will also have a slight mis-alignment. It will work, but is not right. It may cause excessive wear on the belt or possibly throw it at high rpm.

The proper non-A/C set up is for a single groove alternator pulley and single groove water pump pulley.

We bought our alternator and pulley set up from Mancini Racing.

Here are some pictures of the set up for my son's engine for his 71 Valiant. We converted from A/C to non....

like stated non-a/c cars had single groove pulleys on the alt. if ya have a two groove alt you use the rear pulley..

krazykuda has the proper set up..

for a stock alt I would suggest a 78 amper listed for a 85 M body & as mentioned space it fore/aft till one of the pulley grooves lines up (preferably the one closest to alt but this ain't a dealbreaker) or if aesthetics is desired have your alt shop install a single groove pulley & same thing, washers/spacers to get belt alignment dead on. there are 2 sizes (diameters) of 2 groove alt pulleys and you want the smallest dia (dont remember the dia's right offhand and not sure if the single goove pulleys you are after have those same 2 different dia's available. Mopar alts have low rpm output issues and the smaller pulley will help with that as will a large crank pulley (if your WP pulley is small enough to accomodate it). Speeds the WP up also, generally a good idea as long as high rpm cavitation ain't happeneing but an anticav plate takes care of that & is a good (cooling) addition.
