They should be monitored by a parent or teacher.

+1 on that, Second best is removeing the power cable and bringing it into my bedroom ;)

First off what OS are we talking about, XP has some nice features and password ability.

Programs such as Netnanny and such are only as good at the user who sets it up, and also if you want to shut the Inet off totally. Load up a firewall program such as Zonealarm, put a password on it, and lock all ports in and out when you aren't using it, safe for the computer and the kids.

but here are some links

if you need more, go to google and search for "parental software"

hope that helps

You can by a device that just slips over the plug and you lock it and take the key. They are available at most safety type stores. They are sometimes used for lockouts in a industrial situation.

the problem is he's hitting puberty full on and curious and he only see's his dad every other weekend and his mom is a *itch so i'm left trting to block the internet off

I would definately suggest software to block what you dont wnat him veiwing. When I was younger, we had to "find" printed material..lol. Now-a-days, no matter what physically you do, he can and will counter. Cables are lying around everywhere, so are keyborads, mice, etc. the only way is to either block it with software, or sell the computer. At least then he has to go over a friends house. The firewall at work here will not any fiul language thru either, I'm sure it;s not cheap, but effective.

On my 4 year old's computer, I have NetNanny. He doesn't know enough about the computer to be able to disable it, I think I've got a few years for that. ;-)

If I had a teenager in the house I'd have a hardware firewall with filters. The software firewalls that run on the computer are too easy to disable, I would want something that's not on the kid's computer, and something that I could manage. Maybe Raptor or Checkpoint. Or maybe even just a router with an access list and filters on it.

Yeah, I know, that's complex and overkill. But better safe than sorry, right?

Any good Internet security software will have a parental control setting. I'm using Norton 2005 right now and getting ready to get 2006. Like with anything else a few things may slip through the cracks but for the most part it works good, just make sure you use a password so the kids can't turn it off.
Also have your friend watch your internet history. It's at the top of your page. There's a favorites, media, then the round sun dial thing that's your internet history. You have four choices for viewing I have mine setup for ORDER VISITED TODAY so it breaks it down into every web page.
Now if the teens really smart they will just delete the "bad" web sites from the history, but if you then click on one of the other views sometimes you can still bring them up.
Then if the Internet security you use still lets something get by, or you spot a web site in your history that you don't want them on you just ban the site.
Just don't let them know your snooping around. If they ask just say the security updates all the time so it must have spotted something it needed to ban.
I have a 15 and a half and a 14 year old.

check the history dailey! it really can't be erased. if trouble is spotted confront him straight up. most abuse starts late so shut off the comp at 10.00p.this can be a battle so strap on the combat gear, check dailey and cancel the internet if necessary
