Any one use the msd 7 or 8?

That’s what pissed me off as a bracket racer. I go to these 20,000.00 races and know for a fact guys are cheating. I love the sound of mufflers on my car but the use of mufflers came on heavy because of guys cheating, pulling timing at the starting line, traction control basically. If I’m on the line I can sometimes even hear it with mufflers. My track manager has the equipment to test for this but has never used it. This game is hard enough without cheaters. I raced against the “dirty dozen” banned back in the 1970-1980’s at Norwalk

LOL my cousin told me about the dirty dozen.

I dont know.

When i spoke with MSD tech and was asking about the difference between the digital 7 and the grid he said they are basically the same. The digital 7 has the two units inside it while the grid is separate units so......?
I just dont know enough to say why one is ok and the other is not.

Honestly i think im over estimating the not NHRA legal issue. Like i said, i don't race on a track so the traction control would be very helpful to me and if i even can afford a mice truck and trailer then i can afford a new ignition system (probably).

I just dont want to get kicked out on the off chance i do get to the track.

How big of a deal do you think it is?
I csn still run at a test and tune night, right?

Rumors were several years ago many of the cheaters were switching back to MSD6AL ignition because they could be secretly adapted to do some of the same things as the banned ones.

If i realy wanted to be a cheater i could quite easily take 2 old broken 6AL units pull the top cover off, section the cover to fit the 7, tig weld it up and paint it.....

I just concerned about how this will pan out with the street race guys....

In reality i built this car to be a street stomping terror. All the new cars have traction control and im guessing a lot of guys are using it. So if i want to win why throw out the tech other guys already have jist on the off chance i get super ritch, buy a new truck and want to run for points?

Thoughts?

Ok so it turns out the digital 7 is just banned in sportsman class if anyone needs that info.

I just ordered it and some other stuff.
Now i gotta save up for the crank trigger and cam position sensor, MAP sensor.

Now i just need to, rewire the car again..... finish my blown small block and DESTROY some folks!!!

Im very much looking forward to the traction control, launch, start, gear change retard, data acquisition, boost retard and the ability to tune everything on my laptop!

It will be a while until i can finish the new engine and do the install but this is a good start!!

Thank you everyone who took the time to pass on their experiences with the MSD7.

Stupid question - How does the traction control work? Does it receive feedback from a wheel speed sensor or something?

So this is my limited understanding of how it works.

The CPU reads data at 100 time per second. If the engine RPM spikes it will pull timing and reduce power.
That is per the MSD tech guy who says all the advanced timing functions will work with my MSD pro billet distributor.

I think what needs doing is you make a good pass and adjust the box?

It dose not require any wheel speed. Its what they call "slew timing"?

The MAP sensor will be attached to my 6-71 for boost retard. The crank trigger and cam position sensor are not required but will make tuning easier while providing a more stable ignition event.

Not sure if the box will i interface with my wide band but that would be slick.

From the little bit of reading i have done the box will provide more than i should ever need as a "street car".

For me this is a long term build. I have about 5K sitting on top of the china wall, so almost 1K to make sure that engine stays alive is well worth the cost. Not to mention i get all the features i want.

User adjustable.
Boost retard.
Start retard.
Gear change retard.
Traction control.
Data logging.
3 RPM linits.
And much more.

My plan is to have the car rewired with the new engine in by june? After that i will definitely post on thow the new ignition system works.

That's about the long and short of it.

Slew rate is the lag in the electronics. AFAIK, all ignition boxes (and other stuff like timing lights and such) all have a slew rate. Some ignition boxes retard 2 degrees per 1000 RPM! That's a lot and I haven't varifed it yet, but I'm getting my machine set up so I can measure it.

It's fun to think about it. If your box retards 1 degree per 1000 RPM and you lock out the distributor and set your total at a 1000 RPM idle at say 35, by the time you get to 6000 you only have 30 total! If it's 2 per 1000 you'll only have 25 total.

You can't always see it with a timing light. I'm going to verify every Mallory box I have in the shop and take notes and then I'll start testing other stuff to see where it's at.

And here it is!!

Yrah it is. It was funny, ehrn i ordered it yesterday i was talking to a fella at summit and i had a question about the 2 step that he couldn't answer so he put me on hold and contacted a buddy of his who ises this box. When he came back on line the first thing he said was, "wow, that is a trick box. It can do some amazing things."

:lol::thumbsup:

I know guys that have the digital 7 and have added the grid to it because the grid can do even more than the 7.
