I was wondering if anyone had installed a newer 4-sp auto trans and lock-up torque convertor in their early A and what problems arose; like shift linkage and stuff. I was wondering what would be a good trans to replace the stock one in a '66 Valiant. The goal would be lower RPM during highway cruising and also better fuel economy.

I have several magazine articles regarding swapping an A518 into a Dart. While it is a roadrunner they use I suspect you will need to do a lot of sheet metal work. P.M me if you would like the articles. There are about 6 and they were originally printed in high performance mopar enthusiast (?). Anyways I do have the entire story and I can send it to anyone who wants it. Just PM me with your email!

This is a VERY detailed article.

I have read on here that it takes tunnel work along with reworking the torsion bar crossmember. That is why on the 318 mag conversion I am bouncing around I am trying to go 4 speed.

you might be better off with a gearvendors unit? or lower gearing in the rear axle. i have 2.93 gears in my rear end with a 904 trans and 70 mph is about 2700rpm on the tach.
