Does anyone know why & when the Automobile desricption was changed to "car" to desrcibe our form of transportation?

That's a good question Mike, Makes me go hummm :read2:

It originates from the word carriage...as in horse and carriage.
i was thinking horseless carriage.maybe it was called at one time an automatic mobile carriage. then it went to either being called an auto or a car. just my guess.

The word automobile was originally coined by the French, and comes from the Greek "autos" (self) and Latin "mobilis" (moveable). Car has roots that go back to Latin as well- "carrus" or "carrum" meaning "wheeled vehicle", which has come down to us as cart, carriage, and chariot, to name three examples.
