Hey guys there's this old barn find only a street away from me. Sadly it's not a Mopar, but it's a Mercury Cougar Eliminator! Aren't those rare? It's been there for longer then I've been alive. So, I kinda just want to ask about it first before I think of buying it. How do you ask about a barn find without being extremely creepy?
 
If it truly is an Eliminator,the owner will either"Not want to sell"or be asking some astronomical price $$$ JMO.Go ask if it,s for sale.Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies! But, what should I say after I knock on the door, like its a family, and I might be interrupting family stuff...
 
The cougar eliminator is the sister to the Boss Mustang. With the hipo 302 in them. Part of the trans am racing craze. It's worth some bucks if you can get it.
 
Just go knock on the door and say you were wondering about the old car in the barn. If you're real young, it will probably help. You'll know the mood right away. If they pull out a gun, just apologize and leave immediately. Otherwise, strike up a conversation about the car if they are happy to talk about it. Don't jump immediately on "I want to buy it", just ask about it. Get the story if there is one, find out if they know what it is (you can research later to know if they're full of crap or not) and don't act creepy about it. It's pretty simple, play it by ear from there. Either they'll offer to sell it to you, or after you've chatted for awhile, you can ask. Then either way, do your research based on the VIN #'s and anything else you can write down from the car to see what it's really worth.

Thanks so much 72Dodge, I'm gonna go next week I just got a whole boat load of errands, and the usual weekday stuff. D:
Edit: I don't think they want it anymore, it doesn't say "For Sale" on it probably because nobody wanted it when it was for sale.
 
Can't hurt to try. I've always liked Cougars & Mustangs, 1(b) to Mopars for me.

Not all eliminator so were high performance cars. Some had 351 Windsor in them, some had the 302 and the 429

I know where a black 1970 eliminator with orange stripes is at in Florida and it is for sale. Have not seen it in person only pictures.

They are not worth anywhere near what a boss mustang is worth, unless with the hottest engine in it. Then still not boss mustang $$$$$$$

I had a super clean 69 Cougar with a 351 2 bar. Auto 52,000 miles original interior that was close to show room new, sold it for $ 11,000 a few years back

Just like the others have said, knock on the door and see what is up with the car. Don't say eliminator, just you seen the old car and that you have interest in old cars and like to find out about them. Even if they don't want to sell it, they might want to get it running and if you have time and ability offer to give them a hand if they need it.

I like them and wish I had kept mine longer than I did. Had it for a total of 15 days. Beautiful car, drove good they are nice cars.

If it's not for sale I would totally help get it running, just for the sake of practice and fun. It's been on and off blocks. But never moved.
 
I totally agree with Wildcat. Knock on the door and only ask about the old car. Don't offer that you know anything about it - especially if it is a real Eliminator.
Sometimes "ignorance" can be your friend.

Right, exactly, just call it the old car to begin with until you see what they know about it. A lot of people just have an old car around from a passed family member or whatever, and don't have any idea. Or, they know what it is, but aren't in the hobby so don't know what is desirable and what isn't. Just be cool and ask them about it, see what they say. You'll know right away if they know what they have (or, worse, if it's nothing special, but they think it is... that's the worst situation).

Half the fun is just hearing about the history of the car, what they know about it, checking it out, and such. Even if you don't get it, just hearing any old stories is awesome, probably the best part of the hobby to me.
 
I agree with the above just ask about the thing you'll be able to tell if there's any sentimental value to it or knowledge of what it is right off the bat, If not check it out and ask if they would be interested in selling it. What's the worst they could say but no and get off my property.
 
Exactly ^^. Don't start me ,on 69-70 Cougars. My favorite body lines,FoMoCo ever penned.
