I removed the lenses from a 64/65 Valiant/Barracuda tail light assembly and noticed a translucent amber coating on the tail/brake light bucket but not the reverse light bucket. It was bubbling and flaking but it covered the entire bucket area. It was not present on the other tail light assembly. Was this some sought of coating that was applied when new to help the reflective/color properties of the light? It's as if bucket was coated with amber shellac. If this was a factory coating I would replicate it before reassembly.

I'm not sure, but I have a few sets from mine who do not have any coating like that. Someone else may have more info about that.

The only reason I thought it might be some kind of factory coating is because these tail light sets are time capsules, supposedly came off a car with 400 miles on it and sitting in a box since then. By the looks of them,I believe it. I stepped in SH#*!?

perhaps it was a shipping coating, like cosmoline that was supposed to be removed prior to being used to protect the soft plating? Dunno, My "S" was pretty original after I found it in a warehouse with 1976 tags still on it and I recently replaced the lenses, matter of fact they are still off the car.
