Got a question: I have to buy rings for my build and I have pick between two different types.
Now I have an old gentleman who does my machine work telling me that the dodge small block do better with Iron piston rings and when I built my 74 D200 360 I listened and used a nice set of iron piston rings and have no complaints.
Well I'm shopping for a set of good rings for the Magnum 5.9 build and all I'm finding for the year of the block/Magnums is poly rings.... (Moly)
what should I use? Poly or iron... (Moly)
It will be efi and supercharged...

let me know if I'm being dumb for asking this but I just want to make the right chose.
Oh and I'm ready to buy now just waiting on all of you to chime in...

thanks

Poly? (probably Moly)
The OE 5.9 rings are Moly (chrome moly).
If you have new aftermarket pistons you should ask them for specifics on rings, like material, and end gap requirements for boost.

lol yes thank you, I reread this post like 5 time and never caught that... Moly rings
No stock magnum pistons, so Moly it is...
thanks

iron rings is an old timers advice. moly rings for sure. and rings do not know if they are in a mopar or ford or whatever

No, they are Moly faced. No such thing as a chrome moly ring. There are chrome faced rings and moly faced rings, but not both.

My ring set is moly but one of the rings is cast iron, I want to say the bottom ring. I know because I broke one of them when I was setting the piston. I went with Hastings, they were easy to deal with

Yes, when talking about rings, only thew top is chrome or moly.

be sure the bores are honed for a moly ring. ring faces require different finishes. moly is smooth!!

The factory pistons use metric rings, doubt you can find metric rings in anything but Moly. If the cylinders are honed, they need to be honed for Moly rings.

Sounds good, I got a set of Moly on the way and have the means for doing the Moly hone..

I guess what I was asking was in the whole grand scheme of things did it matter? whats better?
and maybe a why...!?!
