Hey guys I tore my hemi down last night and after 130k miles she looks pretty good. Bearings are like new cylinder walls are still cross hatched and I will be throwing her back together next weekend but before I do I wanted to clean off my pistons but I haven't had a ton of experience in reusing pistons (normally building for other people and using new parts) Does anyone have a suggestion on what I could use to clean the tops of the pistons? I don't want to use an abrasive and I know there is a ton of build up on these puppies.

I have a customer who uses Versachem Gasket Remover # 41008 on his pistons. He says it works great and just bought two more cans. Don't know if other brands will work as good.

Gasket remover works great. Softens up the carbon so that it wipes right off. Heavy/thick carbon may require repeated applications.

I clean em in a parts washer with scotch brite or a wire wheel on the bench grinder or.....theres lots of good tips above.

leave the carbon on if its hard and somewhat smooth, it will keep the heat in the chamber where it belongs, keep the piston cooler, and slightly raise your CR. just my two cents!!! but if its crusty and uneven clean them.
