Got this set of 915 heads done with a 340 core. There is no casting numbers or date code under valve cover...only the 915 casting numbers on head gasket surface. Never seen a 915 head with the pollution exhaust. Intake ports are x head size... exhaust ports are smaller. No letters are cast into head anywhere. Opinions?

Look closer on the intake runners it might show 360 as the 360 casting took over in 70’ or 71’ the large mounting surfaces on the exhaust side is why I ask as that is where the air holes are located on the later smog heads they didn’t get added until a couple years later.

Nothing on intake runners except the large 250 cast into one and 27G in the other head in same location

Might also just be factory replacements I have a set of T/A heads that are factory replacements that are later casting numbers but are marked 360 on the runners.

The original/early 915 heads didn't have the pads for the holes. These are later castings, but I don't know any additional details.

Original T/A heads were 915 castings, just machines with the offset intake pushrod hole and 2.02" intake valves.

I agree on both but his casting numbers show 915

Yes, I understand. But the original 915 heads didn't have the extended pad under the exhaust for the emission holes. Apparently Chrysler decided to recast the 915, for whatever reason, and emission-related heads with the extended pads were already being made for other applications with different numbers in the newer, then available molds.

Later castings also relocated the casting number to underneath the intake ports, plus, it seems that the first number of the casting is also missing on the later 915 heads that I've seen.

Hey Dutchrebuild, I have an identical set of heads that came with a 1971 340 that I bought. The block is a 1971 but it has been bored 0.30 over with the double eyebrow pistons. The heads are definitely not the ones that came with the motor as I have set of early 915 J heads from another 1971 340. Someone hooked up a SP-2-P-318 intake to it with a small Holley. I guess that they were trying to get more low end torque out of it.

Any pics?

Loco is correct, later 77-79 casting heads. They were common on Van's. Anything that didnt get or require air injection would not have the holes drilled.
The 25 , 2 or 3 digit. Is the month or year of casting.
I've always assumed they were a J intake core brought back from the dead combined with a 587 version exhaust port. The better exh ports were on 974/596/308 heads.
They are 348915-J heads with a 025 or 25A or something like that.
Went to those same heads in this thread when the 1st set if 308's were sunk.
Intro to a port job
