Brake pads bad?

Pulled my rear wheels off to check back brakes. On my passenger side rear brake the pad has a crack in the middle. Brakes work fine but I'm wondering if pad should be replaced? thanks

I've seen that when the axle seal is leaking but yours looks pretty dry.

Maybe the result of overheating the brake shoe? I have seen that before on my own vehicle, probably wouldn't worry too much if it were me.

Bend the end down a little so it can't come in contact with the SHOE.

if it was me I would change the shoes cheap and easy

Considering how cheap brake SHOES are, I would replace them. You would not want a piece of brake lining to separate from the shoe while driving....

Bonded shoea seldom seperate.
When you do replace your brake "shoes" not pads, continue to use bonded lining. Do not use riveted shoes.
Also good practice to replace all of the springs and hardware each time. Lots oh heat inside those drum brakes and heaty is what weakens springs and the rest. Hardware is cheap insurance against componenet failure.

That happens a lot with bonded shoes , they will wear ok I wouldn't change them

If it were mine (I'd have 10" brakes, but, I digress) I would tweak that spring, put the drum back on, and drive it. Just make sure that drum sits flush with the axle flange. Looks like your studs have been changed at some point and the shank is a bit longer and thicker than stock. Did the axle shafts and drum get redrilled oversize?

I swapped in a 8.25 axle with 10" brakes out of a 74 Duster years back.
