I don't know what they are, "breakaway" torque converters. I know I don't need a lockup torque converter, and I'm narrowing my search, but occasionally I come across these "breakaway" converters. Is this an option that can be used on any transmission? Or would only specific transmissions use them?

Thanks

Mark

Found this on the web:

"TCI Breakaway Torque Converters

The first step into serious high performance, the Breakawayᆴ is a great torque converter for moderately modified street machines and weekend racers also used as daily drivers. It provides approximately 2400 to 2600 rpm flash stall with out negatively affecting part throttle driving. Designed for efficiency at highway cruising speeds and to launch hard at wide open throttle, the Breakawayᆴ is a fantastic all-around torque converter.

Features:
Furnace-Brazed Fins
Needle Bearings
Hardened, Pre-Ground Pump Hub
Computer Balanced
Installation Hardware Included
Benefits:
Harder Launches
Quicker Acceleration
Improved Low-End Power
Bolt-In (No Modifications Required)
1000+ RPM Increase in Stall Over Stock"

This converter may or may not be what YOUR CAR requires. Your converters stall speed must match the power/torque of the engine, the rear end ratio and tire size, if not, you may find that you spent time and money for the wrong converter.
If you send me a PM along with your email address, I'll send you the specification sheet used by the converter company I worked for in the past. A converter builder requires this information to get you the right converter for YOUR CAR, without this information it's just a guess as to what your needs are.
Wisely ordered, a peformance converter is money well spent.

Do it right once.

a custom converter can make a dramatic improvement in performance a lot of guys miss out on because of the expense.

I bought a TCI. It was in the car for a week. Then I had Dynamic build me a custom one. Night and day difference.

Spend the money once and spent it wisely.

Mark, the name "breakaway" is just a name that TCI uses to name their lower stall line of high performance converters.

IMO I'd shy away from TCI. They have a terrible reputation in the Mopar circles. Most guys refer to TCI as standing for Total Crap Incorporated.

Like the guys said a custom converter built for your car can make a huge difference in how it performs. The best part is nowadays a lot of companies don't charge anymore for a custom converter than an off the shelf unit.
