Anyone ever remove the male terminals from above? Looks like an impossible task. Thanks
Don’t see a pic but it’s very easy to remove the terminal ends from a bulk head connector. If you look close there’s a small rectangular notch in the hole where the male terminal pushes in. Buy or make a tool that fits that notch and you then insert the tool which in turn depresses a small retaining tab that’s part of the terminal end and it will pull right out.
Here’s a pic to help you see the small tab that has to be pushed in with the tool.
Push the tang sideways as depicted by the arrow Small screwdriver etc Sometimes the ones with heavy current like the ammeter will heat up and melt into the plastic. All you can do then is try and re-heat them like maybe with a soldering iron, to soften the plastic and let them out. You may destroy them in process
Yea like Del shows I missed the male part
We used to use a paper clip, unfold it, file or tap one end flat and there ya go.....carefully
Thanks, it is a real pain. Yes the female one's are easy. I am going to replace the top connector as one of the locking ears is broken I might just cut them out carefully...
The male terminals are on the cable connectors. Needle-nose pliers with angled tips let you compress them right at the bottom locking tab. First pry out the felt insert for more room. I have a tool like needle-nose w/ U-channels at the end which let me press the sides without slipping off. You can buy new ones. They are termed "56 Terminal" or "Packard 56" (electronics manufacturer, not the car). GM also used them in the 1960's. They come is sizes for different wire gage ranges. Search ebay.
Thank you, I have some of the terminals, I will try again to take them out.
I slide a narrow screwdriver into the connector and compress that male lock tab.
Got them out thanks, what a pain in the bottom, that is why it is a hobby car... I got my new male bulkhead connectors and replaced the one with the broken locking ear. They didn't come with the felt on the inside, is that an issue? Thanks
Felt or rubber? It's a seal.
Felt I think, not rubber.. Thanks
Got some felt from Hobby Lobby , made one.
I squirt silicone di-electric grease into the female bulkhead terminals, indeed all connectors in all my cars, but especially important for those that might see water.
Thanks for the tip.
Yes I agree on the material I found the small ones too, I am checking to see if they are cut for the male terminals. Thanks for response.
Originally male terminals had them as well. Havent looked for repops. Not there yet.
Detroit muscle has them
I sent them an "E" mail, I guess I will call them Monday. Thanks
I ordered a set this morning from DMT, the cutouts are supposed to be in them...
