Buying a 71 Dart

I'm looking at buying a 1971 Dart from the USA. I was told by the license office here in Ontario that when the car arrives here in Canada, Canadian Tire will need to do an Inspection on it so I can get an ownership for the car.

Is this information I've been told correct, I asked the lady at the license office is that a safety inspection as well??.... She wasn't sure.

In the States, when you transfer a car between them, Motor Vehicle must verify the VIN's for fraud and stolen. This would be the same for you not a safety check.

I'm not sure if Ontario is exactly the same as Alberta, but the inspection can be done by anyone who is licensed to do out of province inspections and it includes the safety inspection.
I would check that out first and talk to them, the Canadian Tire here is extremely sticky and they expect the car to be as new or close to it.
Out of country is the same as out of province or like a old field find with no history, just make sure you have as much paperwork for the car that you can get to prove where it came from. They do verify the V.I.N. at the inspection of course.
It shouldn't be too bad.

I have imported a 67 Dart, and an 84 Ramcharger, never needed an inspection at Canadian Tire, or anywhere else for that matter. Some quick tips, a copy of the title needs to be faxed(get confirmation it arrived) at least 72 hours prior to crossing to the whatever border crossing you will be using. If you bought over the internet, print off the ad, and any emails you have with the seller regarding final selling price. Be sure you have the title in your possession. It's been about 5 years since I've imported a car, so things may have changed. Just make sure you have some kind of proof for what you paid for the car. Another note on border crossing, make sure the one you use actually exports during the time you plan to cross. I went to PA. on a weekend for the RC. Got back to the border (Lewiston) only to find out they only import/export M-F 9-5. That may have changed now, but at the time, it cost me a hotel room, and a lost nights pay.

X2... I imported my 71 Duster into Ontario about a year ago and I discovered that this inspection is NOT required on older vehicles.
 
i've crossed a few with no inspection needed from ctc, this is only for newer cars, but an evaluation is needed. Either from a used car dealer, which they have forms or from a company that specialize in old car evaluations. the kick back (i call it being screwed) if the car was evaluated higher, you'll pay the taxe on the higher value.

Make sure the title gets at the US customs 72 hrs prior to crossing. Depending where your crossing, some borders are not open during the weekend.
I beleive that the Detroit border is always open for you to cross, I know the one i use in Ogdensburg is not open during the weekend. Good luck
 
Agreed. I believe Port Huron is the same. Those appraisals are a screw job too. Anything over 20 years old I believe. I also have a local guy that does them for a good price and does gives fair but not suspect values on them. Good luck!
 
Thanks for all your help guys, I told the lady at the license office it was a 1971 Dart, maybe her ears were painted on and she didin't here me.

I'm hoping the transport company will know where to cross and whats open.
