Im converting my 71 Dart to 11in rear drum from a 68 Fury III. Not sure what width of drum was used on this car due to the axles and hog had been pulled and drums were gone. My question is... did the C-body use only one size of backing plate or different size depending on the width of drum? also was there a larger then 11in drum used on C-body's?

Thanks for the help.

The 8.75 I'm working with I pulled from a 68 Newport parts car. On this particular car the breaks are 2.5" x 11". Now I'm not sure if other diameter sizes were available on C-Bodies, but I think these were more popular than the 2.75" x11" or 3" x 11" width.

I'm sure I can post some pix an post them tomorrow for you as I have not yet assembled the rear.

You would need the same size shoes to match your b.plates.2 1/2 shoes,2 1/2 b.plates.Hope this helps!I,ve just done this on my 8 3/4 but with 2 1/2 by 10 and had to get matching b.plates.

Thanks for the info all, Im making a trip back to the yard I bought the back plates at, I think I remember seeing the old shoes under the car!

Are you using A body axles drilled to accept the big bolt pattern, or are you using re-splined/aftermarket big bolt pattern ones?

There are only 2 basic widths of fullsize 11" brakes, 2.5" and 3", the backing plates between the 2 ARE NOT interchangeable, as the depths are different.

FWIW, if you use the STOCK A body width housing with the large bolt conversion, you are actually widening the rear end by @ 3/4" over all.

The distance from the axle bearing to the the axle face is @ 3/8 wider on the large bolt axles.
This might be a problem with certain wheels on Darts.

To do it RIGHT, means a person SHOULD narrow a rear end and axles down the comparable difference.

Mark.

from what ive learned the 3" brakes were for some special imperials and later model vans and some pickups and not much else. most all c-body and some b-bodies were 11x2.5 drums in back. not to be confused are the 11x3 that came on the front of many b and c bodies.
