I'm ready to start my new engine and break in the cam. Can I do this in PARK without a Kick down cable. Can this damage the BB 727. I will not be driving it untill I can get the the KD cable, driveshaft built, set the pinion angle and weld the spring perches in place. I'm jonesin to fire it up :finga:
Any thoughts??

Here is a link to my build thread.

Fire it up. Ain't gonna hurt a thing.

Just make yourself a list of to do's before fire up and check it twice.

Have fun!

Fire it up! Make sure you have the trans full so the pump bushing isn't dry and you may want to have it in neutral (727's don't pump in park). Also, if there is no exhaust on it, you may want to call the police first, before the neighbors do. LOL

Starting a new engine without mufflers is fun but you can't hear if the engine is making any funny/bad noises during break in. I always try and hook up something, even short pipes with clamp on mufflers just to keep the noise level down so I can hear the engine (rockers, flywheel/flexplate scraping) or any other strange sounds.

Thanks for the reply's I didn't know about the pump not working in park. I'll start it in Neutral,
I do have a set of 3" Dynomax Ultra Flows on there so I can hear if there is any unusual noises.
I have a deep pan and a 10"x13" 30 plate trans cooler, I think it should take a bit more than 12 qts.
Right now it is snowing got another 6"on top of 2" of ice. Give me 40* and I'll be back in the shop with the heater on.

Breaking in a cam only last for 20 minutes.....Where I live by the time people call and the police actually show the hell up , The motor will be off already....LOL

The transmission pump works (turns) in park, it just does not circulate fluid. This is why you check the fluid level in neutral. I agree, it should be in neutral for the break in, be sure that you slide a yoke in the back end of the trans if your driveshaft isn't done so that you don't loose fluid out the back end.

Got a yoke in there already, thanks for the suggestions I really don't want to overlook anything.

I always have a fire extinguisher close at hand for first start - you never know....

and a garden hose with a sprayer on it to spray the radiator if the engine get hot.....or put out fires...

Lmao, around here it would be shut off, cooled off and I would have a hundred miles on the car.

I live down south, we always put a good strong fan in front of the radiator to keep the engine from overheating during break in because in a garage the radiator doesn't get much air circulation. If you're in freezing cold conditions you probably don't need to worry about it!! It's 95 degrees 10 months out of the year where I live.
