With much debate and thinking, i have decided to rebuild my 73 318. With th e stock compression pistons and manifolds with a temporary 2.76 gear and near stock stall, is a XE268 cam too much? Will it perform better than the current 260H? Or am I better off with a XE256? I plan to install a 3.23 open 8 3/4 soon, along with a slightly higher stall, say 2,200. Thanks for any help.

The XE268 cam will be a bit big with the factory stuff,(converter and gear) but will work fine with the changes that you have planned.

Yeah, thats why I was leaning towards the XE256, since it will still be stouter than the .440 lift 260H cam I have now. Should I install it straight up or advance it 2 degrees?

Also, I think the 256 will work better with manifolds, but im thinking about headers. Besides TTI, what other cheaper header will work well? Wtihout the motor in the car, will the headers slide in with the whole engine assembly, or am I better off using the manifolds?

Moparj, for whats its worth, I'm presently working on my 318. I'm installing 302 heads with a stock bottom end, Edelbrock Performer and 750 Holley. Its running a 4spd with 3.91s. I sent this info to CompCam and told them i would most likely be installing zero deck pistons at a later date, and they recommended the XE268, which I will be installing shortly, after porting heads. At least you got a response from those guys. I sent them pretty detailed info about my car and got no response whatsoever.:angry7:

LJS30, did you go thru their website area where it asked specific questions about your car and engine, or just email them?

Yes, I went through that form asking information about your car, engine, rear, etc.... Filled it out completely, sent it out, and got no response whatsoever. Not very good service at all.

I ordered an XE268, which will take a little low end away right now with my current setup, but should work even better with the 3.23 gears and if I eventually get a higher stall converter.

It is not important to me to have a lope, bc a lopey idle does not necessarily mean big power, but does the XE268 carry a lopey rough idle with the stock compression and drivetrain setup? I have heard this from other people, but am curious. Also, should I advance it 2 degrees for a little more low end? I did purchase some hooker competition headers as well for the setup.

The cam comes with a 4* advance ground in from the manufacture, so if the lobe seperation is 110 then the intake will be 106 and the exhaust will be 114 centerlines.

FWIW, I have the XE268 in my 360, it has a lot more compression, 10.6:1 and idles smoothly. There is no lope and I can drive the car right down below 1000rpm in 4th gear (A833OD with 3.55 gears) and it will accelerate away smoothly. It won't have the same low end manners in a 318 but it's not going to be lumpy either.

So just set it straight up??

Yes I would but as stated it's not that lumpy of a cam but has good street manners. Advancing the cam doesn't really change the sound of the cam as it changes the torque and power band more. Then it may take a time slip to see this.

FWIW, virtually every off the shelf cam intended fro street use is ground 4 degrees advanced so "dot to dot" has the cam 4 degrees advanced.
