Camshaft Keyway direction

Rebuilding a 340 and do not have the pictures i took when pulling apart the motor. I have the camshaft keyway and it is offset on one side and indented in the other slightly. Need to know what is the correct way to put this in my new cam please and thank you

Stick it in any direction and degree the cam. That’s the ONLY way to know.

I would say a PO degreed a cam using that offset key.
Use a straight key to re-degree your cam.

Replacing cam? Go straight or degree it would be best.

One way will be advanced, one way will be retarded. I would be best to check the centerline of the cam with a degree wheel. But I can tell you that all the cams that I checked, I have not retarded the cam to get the recommended or required position.
