Building a 5.9 Magnum fresh short 9:1 comp Eddy Magnum heads minor cleanup Eddy airgap intake(dual plane) 750 Demon carb 1 5/8 longtime. 518 trans 2500 conv with lockup. 3:55 gears. Car has power brakes is a pro touring type build with big brakes and all the handling tricks you can do. Car goes to the dragstrip 2-3 times a year is 98% street driven. Looking at a few off the shelf cams Comp xe274hr or the Lunati 20200715 or 20200711. I have 1.7 Harland Sharp Stock 1.6 rockers &1.5 Scorpions. Opinions on real world experience please. Max lift would be 565 based on piston to valve clearance. Leaning towards the Lunati 20200715 with the 1.7 rockers puts it at 550 lift and 213/219 @50.
Thanks mike

Check out Utawesome Performance. All he does is Magnum motors, since Chrysler started them in 92. I got some things from him, Comp Cams roller cam & timing chain set, intake oil baffle, & some good advice for my 95 Dakota (stock ECM still) He's very good at what he does, & can probably make a good suggestion for what you have.

Yep...just waiting for others to chime in.

I just reread 360 TrueStreet magnum build, basically the same combo except the Eddie heads, using the 715 Lunati cam. You know I like torque, and it has tons. Would work well with your overdrive trans.

I’m running in the wife’s car a roller cam 360 block with the Hyd roller version of the comp cam. Slugs are the Federal Mougal c116hp (think KB-107) @ 0 deck, TF heads (11-1) & 1.6 rockers, dual plane, 750 & TTI stem to stern.
Trans is the original 904 with a custom Pro Torque 2400 stall & 3.55 gears on 26 inch tires. Yes the converter is a bit tight but it flat out works great.

The car is 93 octane, super driveable, gets reasonable mileage, good torque off the line and nice top end hp.

I myself would step up in cam duration. But it is not necessary. I myself would use the 1.7 rockers for more lift to take advantage of the heads good flowing ports. But it isn’t necessary. Both of these things are only really seen or felt in the top end.

That 274 Comp cam with 1.7 rockers puts the lift at 609 can't imagine the piston to valve would work I'm running stock soap dish pistons

Do you have the factory Cam? Why not give Oregon Camshaft Grinders - Ken and ask what he can do? I have an almost identical build using EQ 62cc heads and the factory 1.6 rockers. Sent my cam out this week and he recommended Grind #1634 218/224 270/276 110LSA 106/114. I believe others here use this grind that can offer their experience. You also can't go wrong with the Truestreet build. Nice flat torque curve (see Dyno numbers). Watch your spring choice with the Lunati.

I'm in Ontario Canada shipping gets expensive quick. Plus 40 % exchange rate does not help either lol.

Yeah. I was quoted $46 but was able to get it into the largest USPS Flat rate box for $23. Shipping rates are crazy. Of course ...this does not help you.
Good luck with your build!!

Juuuuuust lettin ya know what I did with what I got and what I think of it. If you have the room.... just check what you can get away with since you already have the rockers.

Will do I believe from what I've read 565 is the max cam with stock pistons. Cam would still work great with 1.5 rockers

From the opening lines of the first post;

“Building a 5.9 Magnum fresh short 9:1 comp Eddy Magnum heads minor cleanup ”
Are the chambers very similar?
As in how high up the valve sits in the heads chamber.

Give the Scorpion rockers a miss. I have seen pics of them where the anodising had started to fret around the roller pin axle & the wrap around under the trunnion brg. The owner didn't realise that the fretting was the alum stretching, getting ready for the 'kaboom' moment.....
