can you install a rod backward on a slant six?

Yes, you can and you shouldn't. What year engine are you working on, and if it's a '63 engine, is it an iron or an aluminum block? On all 1960-1962 engines (iron and aluminum) plus 1963 aluminum engines, the connecting rods get installed so that the squirt holes face away from the camshaft. On all 1963-up engines except the aluminum blocks, the connecting rods get installed so that the squirt holes face towards the camshaft.

thank you dan that is perfect my machinist has turned out to be less than stellar and i am going through every thing he did..... o well i guess no reversed pistons for me.....

You can reverse the pistons on the rods if you want…it'll make the motor noisy til it's fully up to temperature and I doubt the improvement will be detectable. But make sure the rods are the right way round.

ya i had asked him to put the pistons on back wards and he didnt suposedly the whole backwards piston wiil net you 4% gain but :dontknow:
