cant find reverse or 3rd?

i have the 727 with a reverse manual valvebody b&m ratchet shifter but i can not get it to smoothly go into reverse it takes 5 mins off tryin to pop it in then once its in ya gotta gas it to fully engage? also when shifting into 3rd its like hitting neutral it has a 3500 stall on it but it shouldnt act like neutral it should grab 3rd right? thanks for the help
