A833 with Hurst 4-speed.

If i remove the reverse rod from tab on side of tranny I can manually put the tranny in reverse but with rod attached, no chance. The shifter won't 'pull' over to the left, and so can not move 'up', does this sound like the linkage needs adjusted??

Understand there is a 1/8" alignment hole in the shifter bracket to put a dril bit in when everything is in Neutral but I don't see this hole anywhere.

Sounds like the linkages need adjustment or the ends are worn out. There is a 1/4" hole at the bottom of the shifter housing, disconnect all the shift rods slide a 1/4" pin all the way through the shifter housing, adjust rods so they slide into the arms on the shifter, make sure everything is neutral while adjusting. This is also a good time the remove the shifter and clean out all the old grease and gunk from inside.

The hole for centering the shifter is kinda hidden. There is a notch on the bottom of the shifter body. Its kinda hard to see it in the picture because its grey/brown color. Here is a pic of its location. It sounds like the shifter is still in another gear. Also lubricate the shifter and its sliding plates with WD40 to loosen up the grease in it. Ideally you should take the shifter apart to clean out the old grease and put in new grease.

Did you get this figured out? I am having same problem and was curious if taking shifter apart and cleaning it worked for you...
