my 1969 383HP that i just put in my 1967 barracuda, came with a factory Carter 4736S, but i had a 4966S sitting around that i rebuilt for a 440 Satellite i used to own, and I just put it on the 383. car seems to run better, can anyone tell me the difference that i've gained with the carb swap? thanks Gerry

The 4736S is from a 70 383 335hp and the 4966S a the low performance 71 350hp 440 carb so I would not much of any increase. What you need to look for is a 440hp carb where the secondaries are the same size as the primaries.

The 4736S is from a 70 383 335hp 600 cfm and the 4966S a the low performance 71 350hp 440 carb 625 cfm so I would not much of any increase. What you need to look for is a 440hp carb where the secondaries are the same size as the primaries 750 cfm.

....

Both the 4736S and the 4966S have 1-7/16" primaries and 1-11/16" and according to the Carter specs are rated at 630 cfm.

im not saying you are wrong, there is huge debate over the actual cfm of the 4966. some say that carter never even published the actual ratings. from what ive read they are a 625. im certianly not going to debate over it. we can both pull information supporting our claims. there was one for sale here a while back and the guy looked it up and found it to be a 625 cfm. the "gurus" on moparts say the 4736 is a 600 cfm. i also read where some say the 4966 is a 630, but who knows, i dont use either , i run holleys.

as to the original question, some carbs are just better than others, even being the same exact size and model.

Thanks for all the info guys! my interchange manual shows that AVS models 4429,4618 and 4610 are all for the 375 horse 440, are these then the ones with the same size primaries and secondaries? Thanks Gerry

thanks mcodecuda, the 1968-74 chrysler interchange book shows the 4429 and 4610 as similar, but we all know these books have errors, so i'll stick with your info and look for a 4429 and 4618. thanks Gerry

Here are the part numbers that you should be looking for based on the year and transmission. Now I have had luck using a automatic carb on a 4 speed but I have always had a stumble trying to use a 4 speed carb on an automatic.

Auto Year 4 Speed
4429S 68 4428S
4637S 68
4618S 69 4617S
4640S 69
4738S 70 4737S
4740S 70 4739S
4741S 70
4968S 71 4967S
