Hey guys, i can pick up an all original (needs rebuild) 9801S Carter SuperQuad for $125 locally, from my understanding it features an electric choke and is 800cfm.....is it worth it for a 350-400hp stock stroke 360, street driven 90% of the time?

Should be ThermoQuad. They work great, when setup properly. Check for cracked or warped phenolic bowl section. $125's a bit steep, needing a rebuild and all....$50's more like it.

Thermoquad ?

..

Yes it's a thermoquad. Carter made some aftermarket high performance thermoquad's and called them Superquad's.

Like 65Val said thermoquads had issues with the phenolic bowls cracking and leaking and they haven't made new ones for a long time. $125 is a pretty big gamble unless it comes with a guarantee. I have one I picked up for $75 and that's the tops I'd give for one. You also have to be pretty good tuning them as their not your average Carter. To change jets you have to nearly disassemble the whole carb too so their not the easiest thing to work on. But if their working right their fantastic carbs.

Thanks alot 65Val and fishy68, i appreciate the insight and have decided to pass.....I have tinkered with a regular thermoquad before with all the smog stuff and what a PITA that was....think i'll save up for a 750 demon:hello1: Thanks again for all the input, -Dan

You are most welcome. If you wanted a challenge, and could get it for~$50, or less, might be a good deal. They are said to work well on anything from a 340 up to a 440. The tiny primaries are good for mileage, but then, when you hit the secondaries...down-south hi-way pursuit car sound!!!

TQ's kinda broke the mold regarding large CFM carbs on smaller engines. I believe '70's 340's and 360-4V's came with a 750cfm TQ from the factory? (I'm open to correction here...never had one)

***EDIT*** There's 2 of them FS in this thread. The top one looks in great shape....

No it's not. that is a carter competition series thermoquad, totally different animal compared to what i was talking about....

Your welcome Dan and you might want to check out Demon carbs closer before you buy. I remember reading about quite a few people saying how they had problems with them and they took them apart and found them full of crap (metal shavings and such) right out of the box new. I believe it was quality control that did them in but I see their open again. Hopefully they've got it straightened up because they do have some good points. Not sure their actually better than a good ole Holley though.

My buddy swears by demons but takes a new one out of the box and tears it down.
His Olds runs 6.80 in the 1/8 with 468 Olds engine in a 4500 lb car.
Not to shabby for a car he has run for 25 yrs he had the car when we were in high school.
AC still works with full factory interior and power windows.
