This comes from a -98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 L. Has a 3.73 gear.
What size would you guys say that this axle is? 8.25 or ?
Is it doable to mount it on a early-A ?

It's either a Dana 44, or a Dana 35.

If you can find any numbers on it, I can tell you for sure.

As for putting it in an early A, anything's possible.

I thought the 5.9 GC's had the corporate 9 1/4 rear?

No, they had a Dana 44A, which is an aluminum center section. Not strong enough for off-roading, but probably strong enough on the street. The main issue is that the axle housings could turn inside of the center section.

I don't think the Grand Cherokee had the option of the 8.25. I think it was Dana 35 or 44 for it.

I was thinking that if you wanted to go with a Jeep axle for an A-body, go with a Jeep Comanche Dana 44. The Comanche is a Cherokee, but just a truck. The track-width of the axle is 60" on both a Cherokee or Comanche, but with the Comanche, you already get a spring-under setup.

The Grand Cherokee only came with one of the two Dana's, regardless of engine.

The regular Cherokee came with a choice of the Dana 35, or the corporate 8.25".

The GC Dana's were either a 3.55, or a 3.73.

The Cherokee Dana was either a 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, or 4.11 depending on whether it has ABS or not. The 8.25" came with 3.07, 3.55, or 4.10 with no distinction between ABS or not.

The axle sits at a scrap yard here in Sweden, the guy is asking $675 for it.
The Jeeps are rather common over here so it won´t be that hard to find
parts from them, only that some guys think they are gold worth.
I´ll have a look for a Commanche axle, thanks for the info guys

I think the easy swap 8.25 came from earlier Cherokees, like mid 80s ?

It would nice if the Liberty axle could be used - I believe it's the corporate 8.25 and comes with discs. Probably just too wide.

If memory serves me correctly, the total width of the Cherokee axle is 60" - about 2" wider than the A body, and the spring perches are at 43" - same as an A body, except they are on top of the housing.

Even 2001 Cherokees could have a 8.25". The primary problem with a Liberty axle for Jeep swaps is the width (I think it's two inches wider) and the four-link setup instead of a leaf setup. If you're going to swap an axle into an A-body, bang for the buck would be on a Comanche Dana 44. I'd buy the JKS high-clearance shock mounts so you can inboard them a bit more
