I am new to most of this and I need some help!

I currently have a 318 engine (nearly all parts are there) missing only minor things..

My question is: I am limited on funds and want to get it rebuilt.
I have asked around and have heard prices of 1300, 1080, and as high as 3500 dollars. what sounds like a resonable price? what price should I aim for (so cal) and should I just try and get a crate or previously stock 318 elsewhere?

So many choices..

Thanks in advance for the advice.. I'm glad there is a place I can go to get this kind of info

Well first off welcome to the greatest site on the web. Next what are your intentions? What do you want from the 318? Do you want performance or just a car to cruise? A little background will go a long way.

What kind of budget do you have? If getting another engine is a possibility you could look for a low mileage Magnum 318 from a newer truck or van, or even a 360 if you could find one in your price range.

Heck for that kinda money I would look around and try to find a good low mileage 318/360 from a 94-01 truck or van. You can get pretty good results from the magnum motors with simple bolt ons. You would need to get an intake and carb but thats pretty much it I believe. Try some of the you-pull it places. They are usually the cheapest. Check craigslist too.

I recently had a offer to purchase a 74 dart 318 and use it as a parts car..
I am looking at taking the k-frame, torsion bars, front disc's, rear gears and drive shaft from the car. Are these parts direct bolt on? I mean both cars have the same length in wheelbase and both are A bodies.. Wondering If I'll run into any snags

Is it a direct bolt on to what other car? If it is the car in your avatar, then yes.

Yes, while it is a direct bolt in, you will be changing from the early to the late K frame which will require the use of the newer type spool mounts. But if you have the whole car, perhaps the old ones are still good.

If you want to do some basic rebuilding, take any 318 shortblock and have it machined and intall the les expensive performance pistons. Then later you can upgrade the ehads or any otehr larts on the solid bottom end. That should be well within your budget range.
