I started to rebuild my 318 about 5 years ago. I had all the machine work done, and i have the bearings and crank in. It is a bit dusty and needs to be cleaned before i rebuild the rest of the engine. I was wondering what would be the best way to clean it up. I was thinking electronic contact cleaner or brake cleaner, but i've never done it before. Thanks for the help.

For a bare block I used hot soapy water and a garden hose. Make sure you have a spray can of WD-40 to spray everything as you dry it. I hope it still warm where you are at. Are the freeze plugs in? Hopefully not, it be easyier to get all the junk out.

the crank, cam bearings, and soft plugs are in. Its getting pretty cold, no snow here yet, but there might be before the week is up. I'm sure i could take the soft plugs out, they dont appear to be too much of a challenge. i guess the important part is putting them back in right so that they dont leak. thanks

Well thats just how I cleaned mine but a shop would just blow the dirt out I think. Can't see a shop washing each block down. After you do clean it, put it in a garbage bag to keep it clean. Make sure its oil good, wipe it down with gear oil if it going to be a while.

i think i'll try the soap and water method first. shouldn't be sitting too long, just ordered pistons and rods today.
