is there a clearcoat made that i can mix into say a Tremclad type rust paint to make it more durable and resist harsh elements better .
i was also thinking some urethane varnish mixed in some tremclad ??Not sure but I use to put old acrylic enamel or Urethane hardner in Rustolium to make it dry faster and hold up longer to the elements.
I painted my railings with Rustoleum and didn't want to wait 2 days so that was the 1st time I did the hardener trick. Then my blue cabinets to red next.I’ve mixed the hardner from tractor supply with oil based and automotive enamels with success. Dry time is less than half and hardness has gone up quite a bit.
Sounds like Imron...I painted a 1968 Coronet R/T in the 80's with an ultra-high gloss urethane topcoat from NAPA Martin paint. It got so hard it took a bit to water sand it all nice and flat.
Thanks Rocco , this is just for steel fishing boat gear like A frames and net rollers . just a little extra protection i use a 2 part epoxy primer for bottom coat . , great stuff .I'm unfamilier with TremClad, but I use Majik from TSC and they sell a hardner that works with it. I think someone earlier posted a hardner that will work with TremClad.
Now if you want to get creative, we used to take single stage, spray 2-3 coats of it and then spray clear mixed with single stage, mixed with less and less color each coat. Wetsand and buff. Those paint jobs looked amazing.
You could also just try clearing over the TremClad.
Ah, imron, that brings back memories... PPG sadly has always been an inferior paint, and clear coat for that matter. If you ever want to see a demonstration, buy code99 black PPG and put it next to Dupont or Spies, it's brown, vs. blue. While I don't use their clear, house of color makes a very nice base coat. You can't kill Imron paint. Painted my Ragtop in 1985 with it. Still shined living outside until I restored it in 2020. Now the PPG single stage paint fades each year. Constantly buffing polishing or waxing. My hardtop PPG Base / clear. Shines awesome. Never fades. 10 years in. Ragtop before resto.
Really? I always loved PPG as a body man. DP primer was great on flexible plastics adhesion wise and great color matching. This was 25 years back so I can speak for them now.PPG sadly has always been an inferior paint
